ALCOHOL METABOLISM
After being consumed, alcohol enters the gastro-intestinal system, is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, moves throughout the body reaching the liver, where nearly 90% of the consumed alcohol is then metabolized. In the liver, alcohol molecules are metabolized by several enzymes, mainly by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), catalase and monooxigenase, and the enzyme system MEOS. Alcohol is oxidized by ADH and converted to acetaldehyde (AA). AA can have extremely toxic effects on the liver. AA is then further oxidized by ALDH to acetate, which is then further converted. With modest drinking, when small amounts of alcohol are consumed slowly, alcohol is metabolized with minimum adverse effect on the body. However, rapid consumption of alcohol or consumption in larger quantities will result in an overproduction of compounds toxic to the body such as acetaldehydes, as well as cholesterol, triglycerides, and free radicals. Over time, the result of this overproduction of toxins can lead to metabolic disorders, serious injury to organs, and will negatively affect general health. Furthermore, when alcohol is rapidly consumed, or consumed on an empty stomach, it enters the bloodstream quickly and then quickly reaches the brain, where the activity of the nervous system is then impaired.

ALCOHOL REDUCTION
The rate at which alcohol is metabolized and eliminated from the body varies with each individual and depends on factors such as age, gender, body weight, metabolism, diet, general health, and the amount of alcohol consumed. On average, a healthy person can eliminate approximately half an ounce (15ml) alcohol per hour. That is the amount of alcohol found in only one 12oz (355 ml) can of beer, or one 1.25 oz (37 ml) cocktail made with 80 proof distilled spirits, or one 5oz (150 ml) glass of wine.
